MAGIC FM DISCO – Díoscó Draíochta FM
This is targeted to the DJ’s from the north of Ireland, especially anyone doing Belfast. How much do u charge for a 8-1 wedding in Belfast. I keep quoting £350 and they seem to take a mild stroke at the other end of the phone. Then their voice trembles and they say … Can I phone you back. Now that I have ended residency work after 2 years I am back to advertising more. I am getting loads of calls this week – mainly wedding quotes for this summer but no-one is buying when I quote the price.I know that in parts of England u guys can charge more but the average prices over here are lower but I thought my prices were reasonable.

Groove Spin – Get The Party Started!
Being in England, I can’t comment on the budgets of Belfast brides, but there seems to be a ceiling of around £300 no matter where you go if you’re talking about evenings only. I charge up to £500 for a wedding, but that includes music for the ceremony (for civil services in hotels), background music for the meal, radio mics for speeches and of course the evening disco. For full-time jocks, it’s worth ‘selling up’ your service or offering ‘add ons'(to use sales rep speak!). That way, you’re making more and the customer feels they’re getting good value. As you can’t do much else with rest of the day, you might as well be making money!

CRAZY K ROADSHOW
Magic FM as you are looking to develop new work is it worth phoning some Entertainment Agents locally to offer your services and also sound them out and ask what they are charging for Weddings? At least then you know what you are up against roughly?Hopefully some local Discos can also help although there are big differences in charges according to how much equipment and lighting skill, experience and entertainment value plus all the good points Simon has made.CRAZY K

If its any help the ceiling for a wedding DJ where I live, Warrington N.W. England, is about £150. I’ve been in the game for over 20 years, and the money has totally gone out of it due to MP3 downloading and Maplins type DJ gear.

agreed you want the work and i used to be of the same opinion till i tried something else £100 was better than no quid but after a long hard think and a leap of faith i decided that for me it wasnt id rather sit at home with my family or friends than in a naff social club spending 4 hours feeling under paid under valued which did nothing for my self esteem but thats another thread lol my other half does most of my phone work and shes ruthless let me tell you this is what he does this is what it will cost type thing.and regards agencies the few i have worked for ask me what i want from a gig then if im paid that a i cant complain coz its what i asked for and b i dont really give a toss what he gets as ive got what i asked for.

Compared to some discos I have heard of I thought my prices were good – actually they are lower.
Must say when I quoted someone £350 yesterday they asked did it include the lights.
I told them that it included an intellegent light setup that looks superb, 2 Pro DJs (one to do the music, one for the party acts) use of dressing up equipment and props, free givaways including glowsticks and a large catalogue of music but they only seem interested in the price.
I hope they employ someone for £80 – their lost.
In the meantime I’ll stick to the regular birthdays etc – they are less money but less hassle and of course less gear to hog out.

magic exactly the right attitude it is their loss my response to gasps of horror is oh im ever so sorry madam/sir i thought you were requireing a professional disco.as in earlier post my wife once said to a guy who said im sorry i dont really want to pay that much ok tell you what for £50 he can do you some fairy lights and a tape deck guess what…….the guy booked at the original quote. it is possible you see and i hold my hands up im useless at it at the moment…. as its very hard not to take it personally when its you pride and joy.

at last some sensible feedback lads-agree with all-unless you’re extremely lucky you need a softly softly approach-when you do your first couple of gigs and i don’t care how much “bedroom jocking and posing in front of the mirror you do!!!”-lol-you will make elementary mistakes-it’s more acceptable to the punter you’ve charged a realistic price-if you’ve boobed-thay’ll give you some leaway-be upfront-it’s all about experience-when the sound goes off in your first gigs-PANIC-and you break out in cold sweats etc etc after a few weeks at it you calm down when things go wrong and get the “spare”amp out of the van apologise and tell them to get a pint in!!!
experience will show and it’s hard earned but worth it!!!!
